Phil saw something in me and took a chance when nobody else would. Phil gave me my first software engineering job out of college. Not only did he coach and mentor me early in my career, but he supported me at every major inflection point, when I joined GoDaddy as an early engineer and had to build my first team, when I helped open Amazon’s software development office in Arizona and had to figure out how to navigate a large organization, when I left to start my own company Zenter that was funded by Y Combinator, when Zenter was acquired by Google and turned into Google Slides, and when I left Google to start my next company Humu and raised $100m to make work better for people.

Throughout my career at Parchment and later at Instructure, I had the pleasure of working with Phil regularly as we implemented both systematic and cultural change across the Engineering organization. I started as a Senior Engineer in the production engineering team. I worked with several teams under Phil to achieve a massive goal: migrating our on-premises infrastructure to the cloud. Under his leadership and guidance, teams worked together to create new processes and build on existing ones, enabling the organization to move at an incredibly fast pace while maintaining confidence in the system and introducing further efficiencies.

As I transitioned into leadership myself, Phil was there to discuss challenges, opportunities, and approaches to managing my own team, even though I was not a direct report within his organization. He also led initiatives that brought leaders together to discuss difficult, common topics in a safe group, allowing teams across Engineering to share ideas and grow together.

Over nearly six years working with Phil, I found his ability to balance people management with technology changes that improved engineers’ daily lives to be one of his greatest strengths. I only recently met Phil, and we had the opportunity to meet in person over lunch. The meeting was one of the best I had. Later that week, I had a couple of difficult discussions, and because I recalled what I had learned from him, the meetings went very well. My first interactions with Phil were representative of the qualities one would expect from a modern leader. I had the opportunity to meet him at the VSM Consortium a few years ago. In retrospect, this first contact was about his sharing experiences for a series of blog posts dedicated to our Flowtopia event. His openness, ability to discuss, and commitment to sharing his knowledge and experience were immediately apparent to me.

These first impressions have only been confirmed since then in our conversations about our common interests and related transformation initiatives (agile, DevOps, VSM, lean, team organization, etc.). In particular, I appreciate his availability and ability to give valuable feedback. Just recently, we discussed the VP of Engineering role, which helped me enormously in reviewing my consultancy value propositions and website. He is quick to point out areas for improvement (and more) while also mentioning and supporting strengths.
